We've endured it for 15 months, but it's nearly over. August 2015: Hillary Clinton has a $350 billion plan that she says will make college more affordable. Which has to be better than my parents' plan to make college affordable: “Be good at sports.” --Jimmy Fallon / Donald Trump said today that he has made up with Fox News over his controversial comments toward Megyn Kelly. And if there’s anything Trump and Fox are great at, it’s making things up. --Seth Meyers / Liberal Democrat Bernie Sanders had a rally in Los Angeles last night attended by over 27,000 supporters. It is a chilly Friday morning. There are no clouds in the sky and only a single star has the power to remain visible in the rising sunlight. No wind blows and no leaf holding on to its tree moves making the world look like a silhouette of cut paper against the pale golden east. A variety of bird calls fill the air, the harsh caw of the crow and the song birds greeting the day in the little wood across the street; none of it drowns the muffled motor sounds from streets unseen. The 44°F is a little cold, even without a breeze and I am bundled in sweater and cap. Puck just heads for the deck to keep his cute little feet out off the cold earth; he barks back at the distant greetings of other canine, also unseen. My breath comes in small, visible puffs that float away and disappear into the morning. We linger a while, I watching a plane fly from the west to the east (probably landing at MCI) and Puck making snuffling noises as he examines each corner of the deck for … something. So we return to a humid warmth and the sounds of the washer which is blending the smell of soap with my brewing coffee. They are nice rooms. And now I take a long swig of artificially sweetened, really creamed decaf and say good morning to you.
Hope your weekend is candidate free, ePistliers..
September 2015: Donald Trump said he would replace Obamacare with something called Donaldcare. He claims it would save billions by denying coverage to preexisting Hispanics. --Conan O'Brien / According to a New York Times report, Hillary Clinton's campaign is trying to put the whole email scandal behind her. They say they want to start bringing humor and spontaneity to her campaign. And nothing says spontaneity like announcing you're about to be spontaneous. “Here comes the spontaneity in 3, 2, 1 ... Boo!” --Jimmy Fallon / You're not just buying useless crap, you're doing your patriotic duty to buy useless crap. It is Disarmament Week (October 24-30) - Want power and respect? Want to influence the course of world events? Want to be on CNN every night? Every dollar spent on nuclear is one less dollar spent on clean renewable energy and one more dollar spent on making the world a comparatively dirtier and a more dangerous place, because nuclear power and nuclear weapons go hand in hand. --Mark Z. Jacobson
It is a beautiful Friday morning. There is not a cloud in the crystal blue sky and a light breeze wafts along to stir the wisps of hair at my cheek and to stir the fall foliage into animation. The 58°F temperature is perfect. The only thing to spoil this lovely scene is the TWO TRUCKS filled with roadwork signs that are sitting at the intersection with BRIGHT, ROTATING LIGHTS on the bed of each, STRINGENT, WHITE, STROBES RIPPING the peaceful into bits and SCATTERING it about the neighborhood. Puck retreats to the deck steps to keep an eye on them lest they try to invade the yard, but from a distance. With easy access to escape routes. The air smells of fall, of dampness and, DAMN THOSE LIGHTS. Why are the two drivers having a long conversation with the truck driver from down the street instead of doing their job and then driving away with those HARSH LIGHTS. There are no birds at the feeders but I see them getting themselves up and testing their wings. Now it's SCRAPING and BANGING to move a single ROAD CLOSED sign to a yard on the intersection. So we reluctantly retreat inside to a warm steady light, a cup of sweet coffee, and you. Ahhh.
Hope your weekend makes a big boom, ePistliers.
In the wake of the former Soviet Union's demise, there are literally thousand of high-quality nuclear weapons complete with intercontinental delivery systems going unused. Though these systems are indeed powerful and destructive weapons of war, they are most effective when used in a more passive role. The US and USSR have proven in years of research and actual testing that nuclear devices are most effective when merely targeting an enemy. Actual detonation is not normally necessary to achieve tremendous effect in the designated target's military, political, economic and social well being.

By leasing, you not only save money developing your own nuclear technology program, you save a lot of unnecessary headaches too. Nuclear weapons development is expensive and time consuming, not to mention easily detectable. It could take you years to acquire and build the necessary industry to manufacture weapons-grade material. Even after that, you still have to design, build and test your first device before anyone takes you seriously.

Month of the Week: November is Aviation History Month - In the early 1930's, a farmer and his wife went to a fair. The farmer was fascinated by the airplanes and asked a pilot how much a ride would cost. "$10 for 3 minutes," replied the pilot. "That's too much," said the farmer. The pilot thought for a second and then said, "I'll make you a deal. If you and your wife ride for 3 minutes without uttering a sound, the ride will be free. But if you make a sound, you'll have to pay $10." The farmer and his wife agreed and went for a wild ride. After they landed, the pilot said to the farmer, "I want to congratulate you for not making a sound. You are a brave man." "Maybe so," said the farmer, "But I gotta tell ya, I almost screamed when my wife fell out."

It is a foggy Friday morning. The sky is absolutely clear of everything except the near quarter moon. The brilliant red maple across the street is clear and beautiful but the little wood behind it is wrapped in invisible gauze. Two flocks of birds (easily a hundred and fifty strong) have arrived in the large, nearly bald cottonwood down the street. Together they sing a anthem, perhaps to the fog or perhaps to the rising sun it hides. And then, as one, they rise in a great black cloud and fly – still singing – to the east; this leaves only distant motors and the splashing fountain for our ears. My breath escapes in billowing clouds and joins the humidity hanging in the air; it becomes one with the fog. Traffic picks up as residents make their way to work but Puck is quiet – perhaps the squirrels are all still abed. For a few minutes I try to make little clouds but they will not keep their structure and the cold (36°F) begins to bite my nose and ears so we return to the warm, wonderful smell of brewing coffee. Puck makes himself comfortable on the unmade bed while I doctor my decaf with artificial sweetener and half/n/half. Ahhhhhhhhhh. I put on Arlo singing City of New Orleans and sit down to write to you.
