It
is a beautiful Friday morning. There is not a cloud in the crystal
blue sky and a light breeze wafts along to stir the wisps of hair at
my cheek and to stir the fall foliage into animation. The 58°F
temperature is perfect. The only thing to spoil this lovely scene is
the TWO TRUCKS filled with roadwork signs that are sitting at the
intersection with BRIGHT, ROTATING LIGHTS on the bed of each,
STRINGENT, WHITE, STROBES RIPPING the peaceful into bits and
SCATTERING it about the neighborhood. Puck retreats to the deck
steps to keep an eye on them lest they try to invade the yard, but
from a distance. With easy access to escape routes. The air smells
of fall, of dampness and, DAMN THOSE LIGHTS. Why are the two drivers
having a long conversation with the truck driver from down the street
instead of doing their job and then driving away with those HARSH
LIGHTS. There are no birds at the feeders but I see them getting
themselves up and testing their wings. Now it's SCRAPING and BANGING
to move a single ROAD CLOSED sign to a yard on the intersection. So
we reluctantly retreat inside to a warm steady light, a cup of sweet
coffee, and you. Ahhh.

the wake of the former Soviet Union's demise, there are literally
