It is an amazing morning in Lawrence. The 30°F temperature contains a promise of a day warmer than we've seen lately. The sky is striped with decaying jet trails reflecting color from the rising sun; it makes a pale pink and blue barber pole for the gods. Snow has melted from large pieces of the lawn but remains in shadowy places and where it was piled up. A light breeze blows and reminds me that now is still cold and I should pay attention. The hum of distant motors calls to mind traffic going about its business. While a flock of black and gray finches gather silently in the trees waiting for us to leave. Puck barks at what may be an imaginary squirrel but abandons the conversation in lieu of a walk around the perimeter. The last school bus goes and more finches arrive. The lure of coffee and cream brings us into our rooms where the aroma of brewing Moose Munch greets us. I wrap my cold fingers around the warm cup, my green peace cup, and with a mouthful of chocolate and coffee flavor, I sit down to write to you. ...an amazing morning
Have a fabulous weekend, ePistliers.

^^^^ Pure neon gas is used to produce only about one-third of the colors (mostly shades of red and orange, and some warmer or more intense shades of pink). The greatest number of colors (including all shades of blue, yellow, green, violet, and white, as well as some cooler or softer shades of pink) produced by filling with another inert gas, argon, and a drop of mercury (Hg) which is added to the tube immediately after purification. When the tube is ionized by electrification, the mercury evaporates into mercury vapor, which fills the tube and produces strong ultraviolet light. The ultraviolet light thus produced excites the various phosphor coatings designed to produce different colors. Even though this class of neon tubes use no neon at all, they are still denoted as "neon."

It is a frigid (7°F) Friday morning with a breeze that insists that we acknowledge polar conditions. The matte, pastel blue sky has only a little silver slipper of a moon to shield it from the cold winds. The lawn in covered with a thin layer of yesterday's frozen rain and snow and crunches under foot tries to hide the tufts of grass below. Puck is small and can walk silently over the surface. Even the sound of the wind around the corners of the house compete with motor noises to grace our ears. Puck covers only that part of the perimeter where squirrels might be waiting to scavenge under the feeders but they are still abed and so he is ready to return to the warm. I say a prayer for all those sleeping unsheltered and follow him inside. Here is smells of fresh coffee and the hummy furnace fan sends warmth flowing across the room. I hold a hot cup of decaf to warm my hands and allow the steam to warm my nose before indulging in the sweet, creamy, rich taste of morning. Ah, and now I get to write to you, a wonderful way to spend a winter morning.

50 Ways to Promote Peace - #50: Define what the word peace means to you.
It is a cold (14°F) Friday morning. The pale blue sky is awash with even paler pink streaks posing as cloud banks; but they are just decaying jet trails drifting slowly and pinkly to the south. Only facing the east and the rising sun are there real clouds with shape and texture seen in silhouette against the brightness on the horizon. The waning moon high in the western sky glows as if from an inner light and adds a disco element to the day. Birds are still abed, waiting for warmer temperatures, perhaps; and so we are left with distant motors and local traffic to kiss our ears. From the house on the corner smoke or steam twists violently and rushes south before it disappears in the dry air. No such wind is felt against my cheek; I feel only a gentle brush of cold now and then. Even the dangling, bare willow branches barely wave. Puck stalks the perimeter silently, stopping only to briefly bark into the neighbor's yard for good measure, and then moves on. I watch jet trails grow and decay. It is Puck who comes to say he is ready to go inside. So we return and he snuggles into a pile of blankets on the bed while I take off gloves and scarves and coats and hats. Ah, but then, I pour myself a fresh cup of Moose Munch, doctor it lovingly, take a long, warm sip, and sit down next to the space heater to write to you. What a great morning.
Hope your weekend is terr...terr...terrific, ePistliers.
