It is a very welcome rainy Friday. The sky is an artwork of clouds – thick and billowy here, thick, smooth slate gray there, and now and again thin enough to let the sun light them from behind. Birds are mostly silent and the raindrops are soft and make no sound as they find the ground. So car motors compose the soundtrack. Jeff and I ran some errands early while Puck sulked under the bed. He still has not come out to greet me. I take a deep breath as I close the garage door; it smells of damp soil and happy foliage and summer. Inside, the house smells of brewing coffee and unhappy animals. Onyx runs out the door as soon as it is open, then runs right back in. I doctor a cup of the very decaf that makes the house smell welcoming and bring it close to my face so that I can absorb the aroma with the steam. I sit down and my computer, let a small, warm gulp roll down my throat and smile, because now I get to think about you.

Hope your weekend is legendary, ePistliers

It is a fabulous Friday morning. The sky is pure azure with only tiny puffs of cloud moving swiftly from the west up to the east. 76°F is a nearly perfect temperature. There are gusts of wind that flow willy-nilly across the world. Puck and I stand still on the sidewalk quarter block from the intersection feeling no wind at all while the cottonwoods at the end of the block giggle as they are tickled by the breeze, every leaf shaking with laughter. Puck sits in the shade and watches the recycle truck come by to carry away our waste. The sound of the truck and its mechanical arms drown out the birdsong that makes – now unheard - music in every range and style. Puck, who is walking less these days, watches the recycling truck leave the block and then heads back toward the house. Sidewalks are still littered with empty fireworks casings and are still stained with burn marks. We reach home and go through the various homecoming rituals – taking off the halter and leash, discarding any used doggy bags, hanging up my doggy bag for carrying doggy bags. Puck settles under my desk, right where my feet want to rest. I fix a cup of the coffee that has been wonderfully filling the house with the enticing smell of not quite caffeine; it makes the house reek of morning and new starts and things to be done. So now I sit and sip; think and type. Good morning, welcome to the weekend.

Hope the point of your weekend is fun, ePistliers

It is a cloudy Friday morning. The sky ranges from heaps of cumulus in the west to featureless slate gray in the east. Temperature is 77°F without the slightest hint of a breeze; not even a willow branch is moving. Puck barked into the vacuum. I believe he was trying to stir up some motion, anything to interrupt the stillness. Squirrels are very busy this morning, running up and down trees and across lawns. We followed one, but she disappeared over a privacy fence. Birdsong is everywhere...crows in the cottonwood, sparrows in the sprinkler, robins silently searching the grass. We make it to the end of the cul-du-sac and start back home keeping an eye out for more evil squirrels menacing the neighborhood. The house is cool and smells of coffee and cinnamon. So I fix myself a cup – creamy and steamy, and sit down to write to you. I think this is the beginning of a beautiful weekend.

Hope your whole, long weekend is a picnic, ePistliers

My Own Writing of the Week: I didn't even consider having sex with another person during high school. I didn't have a boyfriend; didn't want all the hassle that seemed to go with it. My friend Dot and our friend Riggs and I hung out as a threesome. We went to the prom together – he bought us matching corsages. The most asked question from my classmates was “Did you know he was taking her too?”. The answer was yes, I went to her house to get dressed. And that was the biggest scandal of my high school career. I thought Riggs was gay. Doesn't seem to have been true. But looking back at my life through the telescope of my own history, I probably thought that because I liked hanging out with him (them, really) but was not ready for romance.

When I finally tried sex with another person, I liked it; awkward and fumbling as it was, it was fun. It didn't have better orgasms; but that didn't matter. So, in the end, deciding whether to be a bad girl was not really a decision. My body had assigned me to a side. --Always Surrender: Memories, observations, micro-stories, fantasies, and lies from my life as an insurgent in the sexual revolution
