It is an incredible Friday morning. 57°F is neither warm nor cold upon the skin and the light breeze insists this is true. The sky is empty above but wisps of clouds have gathered at the edges of the horizons and all are dusted with pink like decorations in the nursery. Red sails in the morning, sailors take warning. Grinding distant motors assault the ears until the brain learns to stop listening and hear instead the splash of falling water. Birds flying high overhead are silent. Puck does not bark, not even at Cooper who can be fairly puppy-annoying if you're only a foot tall. And still the world is green and a house up the street has iris blooming … in October. I notice the splash of the fountain; it grounds me again from my revelry of a walk along a river long ago and I take a deep breath of morning sunshine. We return to the house, the smell of coffee and breakfast and to warm non-wind. So I sit, sipping sweet tart brown water, and absolutely delightedly I write to you.
Hope your weekend winds up smelling like a rose, ePistliers.
Stately Maple Downdate: The storm that tore through last weekend broke limbs off several trees in the neighborhood, particularly maples, including our own. One of the stately maples across the street suffered a rip of bark in a swatch a couple of feet wide and several feet long. It actually looked like it was in pain – never noticed that in a tree before. They took it out. It took less than an hour; 3 guys – one in the tree, one breaking down and dragging and limbs the chipper, one tossing them into the buzz saw. Dust came blowing through a hopper into the back of a truck. Less than an hour to nothing but dust. So here's a picture from a year ago (this is about where her coloring was last week) to remember her by.

^^ Our northern border may look straight on a world map. But zoom in close enough and it turns out that the straight line running along the 49th parallel north is not really on the 49th parallel north. And it isn’t straight. Like, at all. Marked by a 20-foot strip of clear-cut forest, the border may seem straight as a ruler. But as it zigzags from the first to the last of the 912 boundary monuments erected by the original surveyors, it deviates from the 49th parallel by up to several hundred feet. More Details

Worthless Fact of the Week: The Russian general strike of October was the culminating event of the 1905 Revolution in Russia. It was initiated first and foremost by workers in larger industrial enterprises, many of whom nursed unsatisfied demands from strikes earlier in the year. Although the ripeness of workers to strike in many diverse working situations across the empire was paramount, the call of the All–Russian Union of Railroad Workers for a national rail strike on October 4 provided a timely impetus. The railroaders' strike gave them control of Russia's means of communication, allowing them to spread word of the strike throughout the empire, while their immobilization of rail traffic forcibly idled many trades and industries.

^^^^^ The Pig War: United States vs. Great Britain: On June 15, 1846, the British and US governments signed The Oregon Treaty, establishing the border between Oregon Country and the Columbia District in Canada. The border would reside from the 49th parallel, down through the middle of the channel that separates Vancouver Island from the mainland, and then out to the Pacific Ocean. The only maps available at the time were a little fuzzy on details, though, so neither government knew there were actually two channels that separated Vancouver Island from the mainland—the Haro Strait to the west and the Rosario Strait to the east. Stuck in the middle of those two straits were the San Juan Islands. More Details

It is a near perfect Friday morning. The temperature is 60°F with a slight breeze now and then. The sky is filled with flocks and herds of fluffy clouds meandering slowly to the northeast. The stately maples in the yard across the street are definitely showing red but not loss of leaves. The feeders are empty but we hear a quarrel of sparrows nearby discussing unseen their morning plans and high above 3 large, silent birds circle towards the west. Puck is sitting on the highest deck surveying the neighborhood, watching for squirrels and neighbor dogs. His silence is appreciated. The sound of distant motors hum away, as always, but there are few cars in the immediate area and the relative silence is appreciated. Everything beside the stately maples is still green and lush and summery. It makes a peaceful picture and a fine daybreak. But we return to our rooms that smell of fresh coffee and toast; it's a friendly aroma of well used kitchens and of living. The coffee – doctored, of course, with 1/22 & fake sugar – is nearly hot and fills my nose and mouth with creamy steam before the flavor arrives and my day really begins. So glad you've joined me

It's National Sarcastic Awareness Month! My level of sarcasm has got to the point where I don't know if I'm kidding or not. / Can you help me? No, I just waited in line for 30 minutes to say “Hi”

Fair peace becomes men; ferocious anger belongs to beasts. --Ovid
It is a misty Friday morning. The sky is a flat gray; its only texture is more or less gray in wisps and even billows towards the unseen rising sun. It is not raining so much as the air is so filled with moisture so that walking through it or even touching it is wet. The whole morning is not bright but still manages to be friendly. There are no birds at the feeders but overhead a flock of hundreds of swifts fly silently from northwest to southeast; they go on and on. When they are overhead I can discern (feel? hear?) the beating of their wings but still no sound. It is damp enough that Puck has chosen to return indoors to the dry. 68°F temperature keeps me from being cold and damp and from being warm and humid. The maples across the street are definitely sporting fall mahoganies and even a touch of redder than that. Gold mini-mums are brilliant and profuse. For a moment the only real touch with the inorganic, ever-moving outthere is the sound of multiple motors mewling. I linger in the mist, enjoying the quiet morning, but I begin to dampen and I can feel my hair frizzing so I return to Puck and the dry room. Now I am here with sweetened decaf on my tongue and thoughts of you in my mind. What a morning, and it's not even 8:30 yet.
Hope your weekend is completely free of stupid people, ePistliers.

Late Night Snacks: Today was World No Alcohol Day. “Robitussin it is,” said Steve Bannon. --Seth Meyers / Scientists have invented a way for you to change channels on your TV with gestures. Yeah, it’s great for people who like watching sports completely still. “Wow! What a catch — nobody move! Oh, now we’re watching Lifetime.” --Jimmy Fallon / There’s a rumor that the Lakers are trying to sign LeBron James. They’re telling him, "The weather in LA is great, plus as a Laker, you get the entire playoff season off." --Conan O'Brien / This is a real product: Spanx arm tights. You might be familiar with their other name, which is sleeves. Spanx is always coming out with new and exciting body parts for women to feel ashamed of. --Jimmy Kimmel / Drumpf addressed the devastation that this hurricane caused to him: “I hate to tell you, Puerto Rico, but you’ve thrown our budget a little out of whack.” What!? The budget is out of whack? That’s like a fireman rescuing you from a burning building and saying, “You do understand what our water bill’s gonna be now, right? Do you have any idea how many sexy calendars we’re going to have to sell just to pay for this?” --Stephen Colbert / Officials have discovered yet another personal email account that Jared Kushner and Ivanka Drumpf have been using for official White House business, bringing the total to three. They have three accounts. How much emailing are these two doing that you need three accounts? Pottery Barn doesn't send theis many emails. They keep finding more accounts. This is either a massive breach of protocol or Jared Kushner is like the rest of us and can't remember passwords. --James Corden
Not So Late Night Snack: Since the GOP did so great with their health care repeal, they've moved on to quote, "tax reform," which is reform in exactly the same way decapitation reforms your haircut. The plan was developed in secret by the quote, "big six," unquote. That's a group of prominent Republican financial experts, Gary Cohn, Paul Ryan, Montgomery Burns... --Peter Sagal Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me
Five enemies of peace inhabit with us / avarice, ambition, envy, anger, and pride; if these were to be banished, we should infallibly enjoy perpetual peace. --Petrarch

Worthless Fact of the Week: Yes, polygamy is alive and well in Utah, and estimates are that between 30,000 and 75,000 people live in polygamist families in Utah today (mostly in rural areas), representing about 1 to 2 percent of the state's population.  From what I've seen, I don't dispute those estimates.
Weird Word of the Week: Dogsbody – a lowly person who gets all the dirty jobs One of staple foodstuffs of the British Royal Navy was dried peas boiled in a bag. The official name for this concoction was pease pudding, but jolly Jack Tars knew it for what it was, and called it dog’s body. Perhaps it came from the shape of the bag after it had been boiled. http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-dog1.htm
