It
is an incredible Friday morning. 57°F is neither warm nor cold upon
the skin and the light breeze insists this is true. The sky is empty
above but wisps of clouds have gathered at the edges of the horizons
and all are dusted with pink like decorations in the nursery. Red
sails in the morning, sailors take warning. Grinding distant motors
assault the ears until the brain learns to stop listening and hear
instead the splash of falling water. Birds flying high overhead are
silent. Puck does not bark, not even at Cooper who can be fairly
puppy-annoying if you're only a foot tall. And still the world is
green and a house up the street has iris blooming … in October. I
notice the splash of the fountain; it grounds me again from my
revelry of a walk along a river long ago and I take a deep breath of
morning sunshine. We return to the house, the smell of coffee and
breakfast and to warm non-wind. So I sit, sipping sweet tart brown
water, and absolutely delightedly I write to you.
Hope
your weekend winds up smelling like a rose, ePistliers.
Stately
Maple Downdate: The storm that tore through last weekend broke
limbs off several trees in the neighborhood, particularly maples,
including our own. One of the stately maples across the street
suffered a rip of bark in a swatch a couple of feet wide and several
feet long. It actually looked like it was in pain – never noticed
that in a tree before. They took it out. It took less than an hour;
3 guys – one in the tree, one breaking down and dragging and limbs
the chipper, one tossing them into the buzz saw. Dust came blowing
through a hopper into the back of a truck. Less than an hour to
nothing but dust. So here's a picture from a year ago (this is about
where her coloring was last week) to remember her by.

Our
northern border
may look straight on a world map. But zoom in close enough and it
turns out that the straight line running along the 49th parallel
north is not really on the 49th parallel north. And it isn’t
straight. Like, at all. Marked by a 20-foot strip of clear-cut
forest, the border may seem straight as a ruler. But as it zigzags
from the first to the last of the 912 boundary monuments erected by
the original surveyors, it deviates from the 49th parallel by up to
several hundred feet.

House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders today said that
President Trump’s comment that he has a higher IQ than Secretary of
State Rex Tillerson was a joke and told reporters they should “get
a sense of humor.” They should get a sense of humor? You’re the
one who always looks like she just found a joint in her son’s
Bible. --Seth Meyers / I saw that Ikea’s teaming up with Amazon to
sell its furniture online. They say it’s perfect for couples who
want to argue in the comfort of their own home. --Jimmy Fallon /
Trump has an interesting way of answering questions about John Kelly
whenever they ask what he thinks of him: “He’s a general.”
That’s like being asked what you think of your steak and you say,
“It was a cow.” --Jimmy Kimmel / We could be reaching a whole
new level of angry Trump because a report out today says people close
to the president say he is “unstable,” “losing a step,” and
“unraveling.” So keep in mind that means, up till now, he’s
been “raveled.” --Stephen Colbert / An explosive new article
about the White House in Vanity Fair magazine says according to
staffers, Donald Trump is actually moodier and more erratic every
day, and recently confided in one White House aide, “I hate
everyone in the White House. There are a few exceptions but I hate
them.” Is this guy the president of the United States or a cast
member on “Big Brother?” The good news is there is no way that
man remembers the nuclear codes. --James Corden

Worthless
Fact of the Week: The Russian general strike
of October was the culminating event of the 1905 Revolution in
Russia. It was initiated first and foremost by workers in larger
industrial enterprises, many of whom nursed unsatisfied demands from
strikes earlier in the year. Although the ripeness of workers to
strike in many diverse working situations across the empire was
paramount, the call of the All–Russian Union of Railroad Workers
for a national rail strike on October 4 provided a timely impetus.
The railroaders' strike gave them control of Russia's means of
communication, allowing them to spread word of the strike throughout
the empire, while their immobilization of rail traffic forcibly idled
many trades and industries.

The
northeastern-most part of the US — on the coast where Maine meets
New Brunswick — there are two tiny, uninhabited islands in a
political gray area. It isn’t because anyone wants the islands —
instead, they want the lobster surrounding the islands, and it’s
disputed which country has the fishing rights. During normal times,
the dispute seems to be little more than an annoyance. But apparently
now there are real problems because the price of lobster is so high
($5.50 a pound in that area, compared to $4 the previous year).

The
Pig War: United States vs. Great Britain: On
June 15, 1846, the British and US governments signed The Oregon
Treaty, establishing the border between Oregon Country and the
Columbia District in Canada. The border would reside from the 49th
parallel, down through the middle of the channel that separates
Vancouver Island from the mainland, and then out to the Pacific
Ocean. The only maps available at the time were a little fuzzy on
details, though, so neither government knew there were actually two
channels that separated Vancouver Island from the mainland—the Haro
Strait to the west and the Rosario Strait to the east. Stuck in the
middle of those two straits were the San Juan Islands. More
