Peace, Love, and Gumbo

It is a beautiful but still chilly (38°F) Fat Tuesday morning. The sky is a clear blue without a cloud. Even the jet stream behind the planes disappears soon after it floats out. There is very little traffic, a couple of cars on their way to work, no doubt, and a small school bus making its way down Brush Creek. After a few initial barks to any creatures who care, Puck silently sniffs and assumes his character of mighty-tracker. There is a very slight breeze with a coldness that reminds us that spring is still a ways off. The Mardi Gras cam shows a nearly empty street with tiny bulldozers scooping up mounds of party trash and pick up trucks with tanks of water moving slowly as a man hoses down the sidewalks with the water. Puck and I saw no one walking in our neighborhood except us. The trees are still bare, the grass is brown and dry. But we return to a warm house and the smell of brewing coffee and the cats watching us – first out the window and now in the living room. It is a nice house and we feel welcome and warm. So now I'm sitting at my computer writing to you. The temperature is already up to 41°. So rev up your mojo and let's party.

Night Sky, 3/1: With the Moon gone and Monoceros walking across the south behind Orion, now's a fine time to trace out the Unicorn's big, dim stick figure. Many binocular starwatchers know about its distinctive star cluster NGC 2244, a boxy little rectangular pattern in the center of the vastly fainter Rosette Nebula. It's right about where the Unicorn's eye might be in his triangular head. The brightest stars of the pattern are 6th and 7th magnitude. Find them 10° to the celestial east-southeast of Betelgeuse. The elongated rectangle currently stands upright. http://www.skyandtelescope.com/observing/sky-at-a-glance/

Lawrence Is A Wonderful Town Story of the Week: On Saturday, Loring called. Loring is an old friend and a longtime peace advocate. He said we probably ought to do something about Ukraine. I said, yes, and we started by picking a date and time and place. He said, tomorrow's supposed to be nice (it was) and I said how about noon – after church. And we agreed on the county courthouse as a place – visible and traditional. So I put it on the website and went to gmail to send out invitations. We called it A Vigil in Support of the Ukrainian People. On Sunday at noon – 6 people showed up. When I left at 1:30 there were over a hundred people. There were actual Ukrainians and some folks from the Czech Republic, there were young people and old people and university people. They had Ukraine flags and clothes in yellow and blue and signs in yellow and blue. What wonderful people there are in this city. Imagine what might have happened if they'd had a week to plan. Wow Here's Media Coverage ~~The video at the bottom also contains video from a drone camera and picture of the skywriting airplanes. (We do vigil up big)

My Own Writing of the Week: Single Parent Diversion: I found the hardest decisions as a single parent to be health related, Should I take this child to the emergency room now? Should I make an appointment with the doctor for tomorrow? Should I stop being paranoid and go back to bed?

Not A Single Parent Diversion: I claimed that, as a single parent, the question I asked more than any other was “Can't I even take a shit in peace?” I have, however, talked to parents in two parent households that claimed the same thing, so NOT a single parent issue but a Universal Parent Issue. --From miscellaneous untitled writings
