Punnish ePistle

Famous First Words: Here's a little song I wrote.. Bobby McFerrin Don't Worry, Be Happy

It's Words Matter Day. To prove it, here are some O'Henry Pun Off winners: Excerpt from a minute-and-a-half monologue pleading for the love of his doctor: Doctor, I’m in love with you. Actually, I’m abscessed. Now, I don’t want to throw off your arrhythmia but if you’ll do me the fever of tumor minutes of your time. Strep yourself in while I call up the relevant inflammation.

Every moment is an organizing opportunity, every person a potential activist, every minute a chance to change the world.” --Dolores Huerta

It is a very cold 22°F this Friday morning with the wind chill at 12°F. Puck went out a little ways to do his business and returned immediately. I have not been out. The snow is everywhere but the roads. Snow is sticking to the side of the fence and the patio door. Grass is covered; and even the hardy catnip plant has disappeared. Yet, even the dead end Morningside Dr out the front window is relatively clear. The snow has blown into organic shapes and piles. Some spots have only dusting and others have snow a foot deep. (I'm guessing we had 2 to 3 inches altogether) The shed is bejeweled with tiny icicles like a diamond necklace around the roof. I don't always like snow, but it is always beautiful. I am sitting at my computer sipping vanilla nut coffee. Puck is asleep across my right foot. March did come in like a lamb. Love you all...

Hope your weekend is warm and cozy, ePistlers

Weird Word of the Week: Honorificabilitudinitatibus: We are in the arena of sesquipedalian words — those a foot and a half long, whose prime characteristic is their length rather than their sense or value. Honorificabilitudinitatibus may be rendered more succinctly as “of honour”. Any word used by James Joyce (in Ulysses) and William Shakespeare (in Love’s Labour Lost) can’t be entirely dismissed from the canon of English, even though the former borrowed it from the latter, who in turn borrowed it from Latin. https://www.worldwidewords.org/weirdwords/ww-hon1.htm

My Own Writing of the Week: In March of 1965 I was a student at the University of Kansas, I lived in “approved housing” which was a bunch of big old houses broken into rooms where coeds could live and avoid the dorms. One of my housemates there was Carol. Carol was active in the Civil Rights Council which was a student organization advocating for racial equity on campus. At their Sunday afternoon meeting on March 7th, CRC planned a sit-in for the chancellor's office the next day. They discussed tactics. They decided when and where and how. They debated demands. At that time the student newspaper, University Daily Kansan, accepted ads for apartments to rent with “Whites Only” in the copy...there was no equity in student teacher placement...a Black Studies Department. It was a serious decision that tested their involvement and their courage. They had a plan, it was good, and it was righteous. When they got home from planning that sit-it, the nightly news was showing footage of Selma's Bloody Sunday. What a mix of emotions must have passed through them while they watched. Certainly horror, we all felt that. Also, a sinking feeling of being at the end of a billy club or getting thrown out of school but knowing that you had to go on...more than ever...because we all needed it? I thank those people: 1) all 102 of them that stayed until they were arrested 2) The many, many students who marched to the chancellor's house that night 3) all the several hundreds that sat in the Chancellor's hall the next day 4) all the people outside who found lawyers and gave rides and put their houses on the line to bail out the arrested students. I knew people in all 4 groups. I was in a couple of them. Thank you all, again.
